PARANOID PARKWINNER: Cannes Film Festival 60th Anniversary Prize
Lyrical, wry and formally elegant, the hypnotic films of Gus Van Sant poetically explore the search for love, connection and a place to call home.
Gus Van Sant’s impressive debut feature, Mala Noche (screening in a new, digitally remastered 35mm print), earned the emerging director the Los Angeles Film Critics Award for Best Independent/Experimental Film. Since then, Van Sant’s career accolades have included the Cannes Palme d’Or and Best Director prizes for Elephant in 2003 and, most recently, the Cannes Film Festival 60th Anniversary Award for Paranoid Park, his most recent feature, screening in its Australian premiere as the opening night film in this season. Paranoid Park continues Van Sant’s poetic exploration of themes of youthful estrangement, longing and self-doubt - a rich dramatic vein the director has consistently mined in all his films - and reveals a director in full technical and stylistic command of the medium. Curated by Roberta Ciabarra.
Presented by the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in association with Dendy Cinemas.
